LJMU Transport Brief – Links to Photos

I’ve discovered that I hate public transport. If you’re not being squished by one commuter, you’re being coughed on by another. I found it really hard to document my journeys because I felt so dispirited on them, so I concentrated on the destinations themselves instead.

Each location is different and each of them are in the North. The North of different places.

I used different methods to present the pictures I took and I wanted to be as different as I could. Some are in the form of Snapchats and others, Instagram. Some are edited to the colours depict the way I felt in that location.

All the pictures I collected and edited can be found here:

Chester

I went to
Chester with the intention of photographing the super busy Christmas streets
full of shoppers. Instead I was attracted to a really weird street, pictured in
the first few pictures. Then, I went for a walkabout.

Liverpool

“When you’re in cities, look up incase you miss something.  When you’re in the country, look down incase you step in cow shit.”

For the life of me, I can’t  remember who told me this. But it’s true, so walking through Liverpool to take these pictures, I only shot up.

Mynydd Parys

After being
to Aughton, I went back home to Anglesey and to another location with a sinister
feel. Mynydd Parys is an old copper mine and at one time it was the world’s
main source for copper.

Having been
taken aback by the stunning, bright yet dull colours, you’re left in on an
abandoned mine, alone.

I used the
same method as in New York and Snapchatted my visit to emphasise the contrast
between the two places.

The words
used are those from Gwenlyn Parry’s drama “Y Twr”, which translates as ‘The
Tower’. In the drama, we experience the life of a young woman and a young man going
through life together and in each act they climb up one level of the tower. In
each act they’re older – in the first they’re young, in the second they’re
middle aged and in the final act they are an old couple. In Mynydd Parys there
is a similar tower and since reading the drama as a teenager, I’ve always
imagined that that is the tower the couple lived in.

The whole thing went so fast

Come on.. Hand in hand..

We’ll go up together

We have to climb

We have no choice

Transport | New York Snaps

Snapchat – used for silly selfies and shunned as a creative outlet.

However it’s my most used app. Yeah, I send stupid faces to my friends, but I use My Story as a place to store and show off pictures and objects I found interesting. At the end of the day I save my favorites – storage saving!

I decided to use Snapchat to document my trip to New York. I found that a large number of people were on their phones, so it seemed fitting that I document the trip on my phone.

I chose the words beforehand and snapped when I saw the right moment.

#CaruS4C

”Argyfwng darlledu Cymru”

It was announced in George Osbourne’s Autumn Review that the budget for S4C, which comes from the DCMS, is set to decrease 26% from £6.7m to £5m by 2019/20.

It said in the Welsh Conservatives’ Manifesto 2015: ‘The Welsh Conservatives believe in securing and promote the Welsh language. We will be securing money for S4C and ensuring editorial independence for S4C.’

This cut to the grant is oing against their promises in their manifesto.

“Fe gyhoeddwyd yn natganiad adolygiad gwariant yr hydref George Osbourne y bydd cyllideb S4C sy’n dod gan y DCMS yn gostwng 26% o £6.7m i £5m erbyn 2019/20.

Dywedai Maniffesto’r Ceidwadwyr Cymreig 2015: “Mae’r Ceidwadwyr Cymreig yn credu mewn diogelu a hyrwyddo’r iaith Gymraeg. Byddem yn diogelu arian ac annibyniaeth olygyddol S4C”.

Mae’r toriad hyn yn i’r grant yn groes i’r ymrwymiad clir hyn eu maniffesto.”

Aughton

A few weeks
ago I had no idea about the existence of Aughton, a small village near
Ormskirk. After watching the film Paper Towns, I went on the hunt for paper towns.

Aughton actually exists, but I was looking for Angleton, a paper town that
only exists on a map and it’s only an empty field  near Aughton.

I was hoping
to take a portraits of locals from the area – however I didn’t see anyone at
all. I walked around for a while, but all I found were railway tracks and an
incredibly eerie, alien atmosphere.
